A scientist has warned that it is now too late to deflect an asteroid that could potentially crash into Earth in the coming years.
Recently discovered by an amateur astronomer, asteroid 2024 YR4 has seen its chances of hitting Earth increase.
According to Dr. Robin George Andrews, a London-based volcanologist and author, there are now only eight years left to develop a strategy against this space threat.
"You need 10 years or more to build, plan, and execute an asteroid deflection mission. We don't have much time," he said.
While NASA successfully altered the trajectory of the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022, Dr. Andrews argues that a different approach will be needed to stop 2024 YR4.
"It doesn't mean we can use kinetic impactors like it to deflect any asteroid whenever we want," he warned.
