Located in the south of Arizona, Chiricahua National Monument attracts nature lovers and avid hikers alike for its gravity-defying geological formations.
In Chiricahua National Monument, the hoodoos, or "standing-up rocks" – as the Apache like to call these majestic pinnacles chiselled by centuries of erosion – form an incredible stone forest that has to be seen to be believed.
For the best vantage point, take Scenic Drive, a winding road through a valley lush with pine trees and juniper bushes. It leads to the most stunning sites in the park. First stop: Organ Pipe Formation, where the cliff has been weathered into the distinctive vertical columns that lent the formation its name. Continue further and higher to reach Massai Point from where you can take in 360-degree views of what looks like a city made of rock, its soaring spires reminiscent of the Manhattan skyline. For an even better perspective, follow the trail to Inspiration Point, challenging but breathtaking, which snakes through a labyrinth of rhyolite columns to the summit, granting one of the most glorious vistas of the national park. Echo Canyon Loop is a more moderate hike, a three-mile circular trail dotted with caves and staggering formations, or to shave off some time, take the trail to Echo Canyon Grotto and back (0.8 miles). An unforgettable geological wonderland!
