Sri Lanka, May 17 -- A high-level discussion was held on May 16 at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to develop a joint initiative aimed at expanding foreign employment opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.
Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Eranga Gunasekara led the meeting, which brought together officials from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau.
Key topics included improving the quality of vocational training courses, aligning them with local and international job market demands, defining institutional responsibilities, and establishing systems to track the employment outcomes of vocational training graduates. The participants agreed on the need to conduct in-depth research on these areas and to draft a Cabinet paper to move forward.
Deputy Minister Gunasekara instructed ministry officials to expedite planning and implementation of the proposed activities.
The discussion revealed a significant gap in uptake, with approximately 1.2 million job opportunities available annually through foreign employment agencies, but fewer than 300,000 applicants. This underscores the urgency of evaluating and improving vocational training programs to better equip youth for global employment.
Officials from the Ministries of Digital Economy, Foreign Affairs, and Tourism also participated in the meeting, reflecting a coordinated, multi-sector approach to addressing the issue.
