A little over a year since arriving in South Africa with a .co.za domain, Amazon has expanded its product offerings to compete with established retailers already dominating the market. has maintained an online presence since the onset of the COVID-19 lockdowns encouraged e-commerce and mobile shopping.
Initially launched as an online bookstore in 1995 from the garage of its founder, Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com aimed to rival platforms like Takealot, Loot.co.za, and Makro when it debuted in May. The company has since expanded into the realm of groceries and over-the-counter medications.
On Wednesday, the firm announced this as a "significant step forward for Amazon’s expansion in South Africa." They mentioned they have introduced groceries, pet food, vitamins, and dietary supplements. According to them, incorporating these product lines will make tens of thousands of additional non-perishable food options, pet care goods, and wellness enhancements available nationwide to consumers.
Amazon’s latest offering encompasses popular global brands such as Nestlé, Red Bull, and Starbucks, along with cherished local labels including Beacon, Simba, and Koo, thus addressing the varied requirements of South African families.
The online retailer, ranked as the world’s fourth-most-valuable firm with a market valuation of $2.18 trillion, runs localized sites in several nations such as Australia, Canada, India, and Mexico.
According to the 2024 World Wide Worx report, supported by Peach Payments, Mastercard, and AskAfrika, South African e-commerce experienced significant growth in 2023, reaching R71 billion. The forecast indicates this figure could exceed R100 billion by 2026.
Robert Koen, Managing Director of Amazon for Sub-Saharan Africa, stated, "Since our launch, we have paid close attention to customer feedback, and items such as groceries, pet supplies, and health supplements have frequently topped their list of desired products."
Initial reports suggest significant customer enthusiasm spanning all three sectors. Within grocery items, products such as coffee, tea, cereals, pasta, cooking oil, and canned goods are standing out as bestsellers. The range of pet foods available, catering to dogs, cats, birds, fish, and small mammals, has experienced significant interest particularly in high-end pet nutrition labels and specialized formulas. , said Amazon.
Amazon noted that the vitamins and supplements section has drawn health-focused customers due to its extensive selection of multivitamins, minerals, sports nutrition products, and specialized dietary supplements.
At the time of launching, the online retailer stated its aim was to back local independent businesses, with this objective in mind, It hosted its first-ever Seller Summit, gathering more than 300 local business owners at its premises in Cape Town recently. Over 60% of Amazon's global sales come from individual vendors. Prior to this event, in September, they launched 'Shop Mzansi,' an exclusive section on Amazon.co.za highlighting distinctive local goods that showcase South Africa’s vibrant and varied heritage.
'Shop Mzansi' offers a vast array of items spanning multiple categories — such as toys, home and kitchen gadgets, outdoor gear and grilling equipment, baby essentials, travel bags, and cosmetics.
"Shop Mzansi features over 160 distinct brands from both up-and-coming and well-established South African enterprises, every one carrying its own special tale," Keon stated back then.
