The Cheikh Khalifa International University Hospital in Casablanca has performed its first robotic surgery, the hospital said on Tuesday, marking a milestone in the facility’s adoption of advanced surgical technologies.
The operation, which was a prostatectomy, was carried out by an entirely Moroccan medical team headed by Dr. Abdejalil Heddat, who specializes in urologic surgery. They utilized the Da Vinci surgical system—a widely acknowledged robotic technology renowned for its accuracy and minimal invasiveness.
The hospital stated that robot-assisted surgery offers improved visualization and accuracy for doctors, simultaneously decreasing wound size, blood loss, and the duration of patient recuperation.
This initial robotic operation marks a major step forward for our facility," stated Professor Khalid Sair, who serves as both the General Director of the hospital and specializes in general surgery. "This achievement is due to thorough training and readiness of our surgical staff.
Beyond urology, the hospital plans to expand the use of robotic surgery to other specialties, including colorectal, pancreatic, hepatic, gastric, thoracic, and gynecological procedures, with potential applications in ENT and cardiovascular surgery, Sair added.
The incorporation of robotic surgery is a key component of the hospital’s comprehensive plan to update its facilities and enhance medical care by leveraging technologically driven advancements.
