Chinese Sweets Mislabelled as Japanese and Korean Brands Seized in Vietnam

A man from Hanoi is being charged with selling counterfeit candies after he allegedly repackaged Chinese sweets using false "Made in Japan" and "Made in Korea" packaging, according to authorities.

Nguyen Viet Cuong, 38, allegedly purchased six tons of Chinese bulk candy and disguised them using packaging falsely labeled with foreign origins and fabricated expiration dates, Hanoi police said on May 28.

Cuong has subsequently been suggested for prosecution due to the production of counterfeit food items.

The police mentioned that Cuong observed a strong demand for foreign-looking sweets in La Phu Commune in 2024, recognizing a potential business opportunity before this trend. Tet During the holiday season, he used Facebook to connect with an unnamed woman who provided him with candies and prefabricated packages featuring false Japanese and Korean labels, complete with fictitious importing company names.

Cuong repackaged the items at a facility within the La Phu Industrial Park, utilizing a printer to apply false expiry dates onto every package. The resources used were inexpensive: VND300,000 ($12) bought him a 10-kilogram carton of sweets, while VND100,000 ($4) was enough for one kilogram of packaging material.

From November 2024 until his apprehension, Cuong is alleged to have manufactured 25,150 fake candy packets, with about 1,500 being sold. Law enforcement confiscated over 23,600 packets, estimated to be worth roughly VND429 million ($16,900).
