Approval was granted for an additional 30 GWh of battery energy storage capacity.
India has reported that it reached its maximum electricity demand of 241 gigawatts (GW) on June 9th.
As stated by Union Minister Manohar Lal, this was accomplished without any peak shortages being reported.
He also announced that the Ministry of Power has approved an INR 5,400 crore Viability Gap Funding scheme for 30 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS). This was in addition to the 13.2 GWh already underway.
The objective of this investment is to secure INR 33,000 crore in funding to fulfill the nation's BESS needs by 2028.
The union minister stated that the exemption from Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for storage initiatives will be prolonged up until June 30, 2028. This concession will advantage pumped storage ventures awarded as well as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) commissioned prior to this deadline.
The minister stated that India plans to spend ₹53,000 crores on an Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHV AC) Transmission System for this purpose. Nine 1,100-kilovolt (kV) lines and ten substations have been designated by the administration for development by the year 2034.
To draw additional private investors, the scope of the Late Payment Surcharge (LPS) Rules has been extended to cover Intra-State Transmission Systems.
During the period from 2024 to 2025, India achieved its peak addition of power-generation capability at 34 gigawatts (GW), out of which renewables contributed approximately 29.5 GW. This brings the nation’s total installed capacity to 472.5 GW, nearly doubling since 2014 when it stood at around 249 GW.
