Ogun Fights Plastic Pollution With Cash-For-Waste Program

The Ogun State government, on Tuesday, unveiled two initiatives – the Plastic For Cash and the Blue Box – to combat plastic pollution and environmental degradation.

At the unveiling ceremony held at the Owu Palace, which was organized as part of the events celebrating the 2025 World Environment Day with the theme "Combatting Plastic Pollution," Governor’s spouse Bamidele Abiodun announced these new initiatives. She stated that the programs aim to incentivize people for participating in plastic recycling and proper waste management practices, thereby fostering a sustainable lifestyle among residents.

She stated that the programs demonstrated how innovative ideas can lead to enduring shifts in behavior.

She, therefore, called on residents to support the initiatives, adding that a growing crisis of plastic pollution would affect health, the economy and the planet.

"We need to tackle this issue with daring concepts, feasible answers, and a shared determination to achieve a cleaner, more wholesome, and secure ecosystem," she stated.

Earlier, the Environmental Commissioner, Dr. Ola Oresanya, stated that this year's World Environment Day theme is both timely and crucial for the ecosystem, economic well-being, and citizen health.

The commissioner further stated that plastic items like bottles, grocery bags, cups, and more have escalated into a worldwide crisis, clogging up aquatic systems, contaminating soil, and entering the food chain.

Oresanya emphasized that the Plastic For Cash and Blue Box programs were more than just policies; they represented a movement aimed at fostering behavioral changes among residents. Through these initiatives, people could trade properly sorted plastic waste for money and valuable goods.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, on his side, urged the community members to adopt new attitudes.

He cautioned against haphazard disposal of plastic waste because it leads to both environmental deterioration and harm to marine creatures.

The event included supportive messages from the National Environment Standard Regulation Enforcement Agency, the Nigeria Environmental Society, as well as the Ogun State Waste Management Authority.
