The Ogun state government announced that it has equipped its Gateway International Airport with top-notch lighting systems, bringing them nearer to obtaining commercial clearance for the airport.
The government issued this statement through a document signed by Kayode Akinmade, who serves as the Special Adviser on Media for the Governor, and provided to The PUNCH on Tuesday.
As stated, the airport has fulfilled all required criteria since the State Government had equipped it with advanced lighting systems prior to the formal launch of both domestic and international scheduled services.
When the report was filed, the airport had received approval from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority for conducting nonscheduled operations. However, the government has been making ongoing efforts to facilitate a shift towards obtaining authorization for regular commercial flights.
The governor's assistant mentioned that among the installations is a Category I approach lighting system, designed to assist pilots during adverse weather conditions when they are making their final approach for landing.
He mentioned that they also set up raised-end lighting systems at the runways, which help pilots gauge how close they are to the runway’s end. Additionally, displaced threshold lights were put in place to offer visual cues about the relocated beginning of the runway, marking the spot beyond which the surface isn’t built to support landings safely.
He added, "At airports, you have runway edge lights that offer side visibility aids for pilots during takeoffs and landings. Additionally, there are Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI) consisting of a series of color-changing lights. When correctly positioned, these PAPIs help pilots gauge their angle of descent as they approach the runway, ensuring they reach the right spot on the tarmac."
In the meantime, The PUNCH has learned that as a Category 9 fire coverage airport, planes of every dimension are permitted to touch down at this facility around the clock, regardless of the hour. This capability is supported by an expansive apron spanning 82,000 square meters.
He added, "A number of premium VIP lounges along with various aesthetically pleasing facilities have been established to offer superior relaxation zones. These include specially crafted areas intended for business travelers who wish to keep working and conducting meetings while they await their flights."
Akinmade remembered that the Ogun State Government had mentioned that the airport boasts a 3.4-kilometer runway, classifying it as a Class E facility capable of handling larger planes like the Boeing 777, 747, and Airbus A380.
