PHOTOS: China Tests New Manned Spacecraft with Escape Flight System

On Tuesday, China successfully conducted tests of its advanced manned spacecraft, called Mengzhou, for a zero-gravity emergency escape system at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

At 12:30 PM, the escape engines fired up, propelling both the vehicle and the escape tower upward. In just 20 seconds, the descent module detached and released its chutes, touching down gently under an airbag buffer approximately two minutes after separation.

The test verified crucial safety systems such as separation mechanisms and escape controls. Additionally, it confirmed the incorporation of both escape and survival functionalities within a single integrated spacecraft—a departure from the earlier Shenzhou design.

Mengzhou, which can accommodate up to seven astronauts, will support upcoming space station missions as well as China's planned crewed lunar landings. Additionally, related systems such as the Long March-10 rocket and a lunar landing vehicle are currently being developed.
