Morocco is accelerating its green hydrogen ambitions, with planned projects valued at nearly $300 billion, according to Gi2, a consultancy specializing in renewable energy.
Leveraging its rich solar and wind resources and extensive coastline, the kingdom aims to supply more than 4 percent of global hydrogen demand, positioning itself as a key player in the global energy transition.
“These projects will enable the development of 120 gigawatts of renewable electricity capacity,” said Gi2 CEO Badr Ikken in comments to Asharq.
“They offer significant potential for industrial integration, value creation, and new employment opportunities across the hydrogen value chain.”
This national push toward green hydrogen aligns with findings from a recent study published in Nature Energy by researchers from the universities of Zurich and Oxford.
The study, titled Mapping the Cost Competitiveness of African Green Hydrogen Imports to Europe, identifies Morocco as the most economically viable African country for hydrogen exports under multiple financing scenarios.
Among 31 countries evaluated, Morocco recorded the lowest weighted average cost of capital (COC), 10.6 percent under standard commercial conditions and 8.1 percent with de-risking.
These rates are more favorable than Algeria (11.8/8.4 percent), Mauritania (13.6/8.6), and Egypt (15.2/9.2), underscoring Morocco’s strong institutional quality and proximity to European demand hubs such as Rotterdam.
The study further notes Morocco’s competitive Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), estimated at €4.4 per kilogram, driven by cost-effective electrolyser technology and renewable energy inputs.
While countries like Mauritania may become cost leaders under de-risked scenarios, Morocco retains an edge through its regulatory stability, infrastructure, and integration into global supply chains.
Together, the Gi2 roadmap and international benchmarks reinforce Morocco’s emergence as a green hydrogen powerhouse on the African continent, strategically positioned to meet rising European demand.
