Kim Se-jeong's 'Moon River' Aims to Ride K-Pop Wave and Spotlight Korea

Actor Kim Se-jeong, known for her role in the fantasy historical drama "Moon River," shared her hopes that the global attention generated by Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" would translate into interest for this new project. During the production presentation for the upcoming MBC Friday-Saturday drama "Moon River," held at MBC’s Sangam headquarters on the morning of the 30th, Kim expressed her desire for the show to air quickly as the popularity of "KPop Demon Hunters" grows. She mentioned, “I thought, ‘I wish 'Moon River' would air quickly when the storm of 'KPop Demon Hunters' hits.’” Kim added, “When international fans showed interest in Korean culture, elegance, and romantic comedies, I wanted to use this drama to showcase how wonderful Korea is.”

The globally popular "KPop Demon Hunters" featured an OST from the drama "Office Matchmaking," in which Kim starred alongside actor Ahn Hyo-seop, leading to renewed attention. Kim noted, “I’ve felt the retroactive interest in 'Business Proposal' due to 'KPop Demon Hunters’ popularity,” and urged, “If you enjoyed 'KPop Demon Hunters,' you’ll find 'Moon River' entertaining too. Please give our drama the same attention you’ve given to Korean culture.”

"Moon River" follows Crown Prince Yi Kang (played by Kang Tae-oh), who loses his smile after the death of his lover, and Park Dal-i (Kim Se-jeong), a peddler who loses her memory and swaps souls with the prince. Regarding her dual-role performance, Kim said, “I sought advice from Han Ji-hye, famous for her dual-role acting in 'Secret Garden.' She told me, 'It’s important to share many scenes with your co-star. Swap scripts and discuss when you have time.' I shared many stories with Kang Tae-oh about unconscious habits that naturally emerge on set.”

Kang Tae-oh shared, “Since our characters swap souls, I observed Kim Se-jeong closely—her smiles, expressions, and unconscious gestures. I tried to embody her energetic 'energy bar'-like presence when the souls switch.”

Kim reflected on her chemistry with Kang, “In romantic comedies, the three key elements are on-set atmosphere, comedic timing, and eye contact. We laughed so much on set, and Kang perfectly received my ad-libs. His eyes added unexpected romantic moments. Everything clicked.”

Kang added, “Our chemistry and timing were spot-on, and I believe that energy is fully captured in this work. I feel no pressure competing with other romantic comedies airing in the same time slot.”

At the event, director Lee Dong-hyun and the cast pledged to treat MBC staff to 600 cups of coffee if the drama achieves double-digit viewership ratings. Lee said, “I hope for double-digit ratings. I’ll personally buy 100 cups of coffee at MBC’s headquarters gate.” Kang added, “I’ll cover another 100 cups,” while Kim promised, “I’ll wear a hanbok and distribute the coffee.” Actors Lee Shin-young and Hong Soo-joo joined in, and Jin Goo joked, “I won’t attend, but I’ll send 300 cups. Let coffee flow at MBC’s gate!”

"Moon River" is a fantasy historical romance about Crown Prince Yi Kang (Kang Tae-oh), who becomes indifferent to the kingdom after losing his lover, and Park Dal-i (Kim Se-jeong), a peddler with a lively energy and a Chungcheong dialect, whose soul swaps with the prince. Jin Goo plays Kim Han-cheol, the Left State Councilor with unchecked power. Lee Shin-young portrays Yi Woon, Yi Kang’s deposed cousin, and Hong Soo-joo plays Kim Woo-hee, the councilor’s only daughter trapped as a tool for her family.

The series premieres on MBC on November 7th at 9:50 p.m.
