Trump Jokes Xi Is 'Tough Negotiator' Before Key South Korea Summit

A Historic Encounter Between Two Global Leaders

Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met for the first time in six years on Thursday morning in South Korea. This meeting marked a significant moment in international diplomacy, as both leaders came together to discuss pressing global issues.

Xi acknowledged the 'frictions' between the two countries, while Trump joked about his counterpart being a 'tough negotiator.' The handshake symbolized a new chapter in U.S.-China relations, especially after Trump initiated a trade war with China shortly after returning to office.

This meeting is high-stakes for both nations, and the two leaders appeared to be on their best behavior. During negotiations at an air base in Busan, South Korea, Xi stated, "Given our different national conditions, we do not always see eye-to-eye with each other and it is normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions every now and then."

Trump, facing challenges on the foreign stage, needed a political win after his peace deal between Israel and Hamas began to unravel and talks for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia stalled. Before his meeting with Xi, Trump announced on social media that the Department of War should begin nuclear weapon testing 'immediately' to match the level of testing by Russia and China.

While Trump often uses flattery to build relationships with adversarial leaders, he also had a quip for Xi. "I think he's a very tough negotiator. That's not good," Trump chuckled as he briefly spoke with reporters ahead of their meeting. He added, "We'll have a great understanding. We have a good relationship."

Meanwhile, Xi described their relationship as 'warm.' He mentioned, "Since your reelection we have spoken on the phone three times, exchanged several letters and stayed in close contact." According to a live translation of his remarks, Xi insisted, "You and I, at the helm of U.S.-China relations, should stay the right course."

Despite Trump's critical stance towards Xi in his second term, he has linked the Chinese leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean autocrat Kim Jong Un on his social media platform, Truth Social. However, Xi brings a strong negotiating position to the table, given that China produces 80 to 90 percent of the world's rare earth minerals, which are crucial for America's high-tech industry.

Although the U.S. has discovered that Beijing can survive without its farmers' soybeans, Trump realizes that his country cannot thrive without the rare earths from China.

Key Players and Context

The meeting took place at the Gimhae South Korean Air Base, located at the edge of the Gimhae International Airport. Trump's team included Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller, and Trade Advisor Jamieson Greer.

The president's trip through Asia began in Malaysia, followed by Japan, and concluded in South Korea with his meeting with Xi. This journey was aimed at strengthening international ties and addressing key global issues.

Questions Surrounding the Meeting

As Trump heads to South Korea, several questions arise regarding the potential outcomes of this historic encounter:

  • Is a dramatic face-off with China's Xi Jinping brewing over escalating trade tensions?
  • Is a groundbreaking trade deal with China on the horizon as Trump gears up to tango with President Xi in South Korea?
  • Will Trump's high-stakes face-off with Xi Jinping reset U.S.-China ties after months of fiery exchanges?
  • Could Trump's high-stakes meeting with Xi Jinping spell the end of the trade war?
  • Can Trump and Xi Jinping thaw frosty relations with a game-changing deal in their first meeting since his 2025 comeback?
